Earthquake: Is the shaking of the earth because of the earth's crust. Because of the sudden release of the Earth's energy, that is the reason for earthquakes. It happens inside the earth's crust, which then produces seismic waves.
Elastic Rebound: Elastic Rebound is a theory, of how energy is released into the earth, when an earthquake occurs. Rocks on opposite sides of a fault force and shift, it causes their energy to accumulate. Then deforms until their strength is exceeded.
Focus: The depth of the focus means the depth of an earthquake occurs. Earthquakes less of 70 km are called "shallow focus" earthquakes. Deep-focus earthquakes are caused by the olivine undergoing a phase transition into a spinel structure.
Epicenter: The epicenter is directly above the point of where the fault begins to fall (above the hypocenter or focus) In a more dangerous situation, the length of the fault rupture is much longer. It happens where the earthquake or underground explosion originates.
Seismology: The scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of propagation through the Earth or through other planet-like bodies. Seismic waves are elastic waves that propagate in solid or fluid materials.
Seismograph: Seismographs detect seismic waves which are generated from earthquakes. It is a very sensitive instrument which was first made in China A.D. 136 by a Chinese man named Choko. Because of the seismograph, studies about Earthquakes and such are more advanced day by day.
Magnitude: The determination of the size and greatness of an earthquake. The Richter Magnitude Scale is an instrument that can find out the magnitude of an earthquake.
Intensity: Intensity is the power transferred per unit area. In the SI system, it has units watts per meter squared (W/m2). It is used most frequently with waves.
Tsunami: Is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, generally an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and underwater explosions have the potential to generate a tsunami.
